Warriors win powwow youth basketball tournament
The Warriors, a team consisting of Jamahl Rivers, 17, of Vancouver, Wash., Andrew Barry, 14, of Monmouth, Michael Lyons, 17, of Seaside, and Julian Lane, 15, of Grand Ronde, won the High School Division during the 2013 Native Youth Contest Powwow 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament held Aug. 16-17 at Uyxat Powwow Grounds.
Taking second place in the High School Division was Team Nike, which consisted of Brody Bruckner, 15, of Grand Ronde, Logan Bobb, 15, of Dallas, Brenon Bobb, 16, of Salem, and Dakota Rock, 15, of Willamina.
In the Middle School Division, The Dragons, a team out of Dallas, took first place. Team members were Evan Courtney, Jaret Stewart, Cooper Butler and T.J. Dimick, all 13 years of age.
Second place in the Middle School Division went to Lil' Agency Creek from Grand Ronde. Team members were Anthony Simmons, 13, Isaiah Holmes, 13, True Gibbons, 13, and Justin Gonzalez, 12.
The three-point shooting contest was won by Chris Savoldi and Robert Two Two finished second.
Tribal Elder Alton Butler and Brihtani Lassiter of McMinnville refereed the games.
The tournament was put on by the Tribe's Recreation Department.
"We had three more teams than last year," said Tribal Recreation Coordinator Matt Mosley. "Eleven total teams and 44 youth. There were five teams in the Middle School Division and six in the High School Division. We had teams from Siletz and Yakama, as well as three teams from Grand Ronde."
