Walking On -- Valarene Grout and Donna Johnson
March 20, 1935 – Oct. 13, 2018
Our beloved family matriarch Val Mae Grout walked on peacefully on Saturday evening, Oct. 13, in Grand Ronde surrounded by children and grandchildren.
Val was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Grout, and leaves behind her children, Sharon (Steve) Freund, Janell (Tim) Haller, Richard (Faith) Grout, Penny (Lloyd) DeLoe and Boone (Genifer) Grout.
Val was exceedingly proud of her large, close family that gave her 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as many adopted family members. She is survived by her brother, Les Houck, and she will now join her siblings Arlene Beck and Arnold Houck in Heaven.
Val was born on the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation to DeWalt David and Arvella Cora (Hudson) Houck on March 20, 1935. Val married Peter Grout on May 21, 1955, in Grand Ronde. She was a proud member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, where she was recognized as an Elder and a leader. Val served 15 years on Tribal Council and became one of the most beloved leaders in the history of the Tribe. Val will always be remembered for her tireless volunteer work, offering and preparing meals for families who had lost loved ones. Val worked in the kitchen preparing meals for all of the Tribe’s early powwows.
A funeral service was held in Grand Ronde at the Tribal gym on Thursday, Oct. 18. Interment followed at the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery.
