Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek has appointed Tribal Member Shayla Duke to serve as the Oregon Disabilities Commission liaison to the state Building Codes Structures Board.

In September, Duke, who lives in Eugene, spoke to the state Senate Interim Committee on Rules and Appointments, whose members confirm the governor’s appointments.

Ensuring that building codes reflect the needs of all community members, including those with disabilities, is vital, Duke told the committtee.

“Buildings should be wired not only for sound alerts such as the traditional ear-piercing smoke alarm tones, but also for visual alerts like flashing lights, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing,” she said. “Live wired intercom systems should also be a standard requirement.”

Duke said she brings both work and personal experience to the appointment, as she is serving her second year on the Oregon Disabilities Commission. She has also worked in leadership roles in construction administration, housing and the nonprofit sector, and as a personal support worker.

Duke copes with mobility challenges brought on by a 2018 car accident.

“I have seen firsthand the importance of creating accessible environments for all, particularly for individuals with disabilities,” Duke said. “It is vital that our building codes promote inclusivity, allowing everyone to fully participate in their communities.”
